paper 11B section 4 question 12

hi sorry for being a pain but can someone exlpain the answer to test 11B section 4 question 12. i can see the answer is a but whi is it that and c d or e? just looking at it again is it because if there is 3 shapes they need to be the same but if theres 2 they are different but with one with line through middle?

We think because you count up the total number of sides of the figures within the circles - answer a is the only one with 9 in total like the two given figures.
