Hi Folks

My son has just started year 5 in a comprehenisve school. About 2 years ago, he sat some tests and his teachers recommended that he has special educational needs. Apparently, his English grammar is not very good.

Do you think I should still encourage him to sit the eleven plus in order for him to gain a place in a grammar school, or would this be very difficult/impossible since he has been labelled as SEN?

There are plenty of pupils at GS with special needs.

Being on the SEN register for weak grammar is unusual. It depends on the format of the 11+ in your area as to whether weak grammar will affect his chances.

I think it depends how well he is doing in other areas of the curriculum. For example, is he already working at level 4 in Maths?

Is it known what causes the problem with English?

Has the school told you he is on 'School Action'?

Thanks for your replies. By 'weak grammar' I mean that he can write about half a page of an excerise book without any capital letters, full stops, or commas etc. His maths seems to be ok, although he is working on 3c at the moment.

The school has not mentioned anything about the 'school action' programme.

Can you please tell me what that is?

school action - arrangements made in class, use of TA, altered work.
school action + - outside specialists involved, speech and language, ed psychs etc.

At the beginning of Y5 the average child should be around the 3b level, by the end of Y5 an average child should be around 3a / 4c.

Geek84, is he in year 5 at primary school now? And when was he assessed as 3c and in what subjects? Do you have to write in the 11plus in your area? We don't here in Kent. It is all multiple choice.

My DS is in Year 8 of a GS and has a statement of SEN. He has poor handwriting & spellings, doesn't understand the concept of capital letters and hates punctuation. He is however doing very well and enjoys his GS.
