Can a child be on the SEN register without a statement? How does this relate to school action/ school action plus? How does being on the SEN register relate to the 11+, especially an appeal?
All info very welcome!

A child can be on the SEN register without having a statement. If a child is on school action, extra support is usually given from within the school and school action plus means that the school may require outside support for a child as well as support that the school can give. I can't help with regards to the 11+ and an appeal but I'm sure someone will come along who can or a SENCO teacher may be able to advise you.

1. Being on the SEN register - depending on what it's for and what impact it has - might be an extenuating circumstance for an appeal against non-qualification, but there would still need to be sufficient evidence of high ability.

2. If the child has a disability which meant he/she was disadvantaged by the format of the 11+, it might be possible to put forward a case that there has been discrimination. However, the disability would need to be substantial (more than minor), and the relevant authority would need to have known about it prior to the 11+, so that they had an opportunity to consider making reasonable adjustments.
