Just to narrow down your search- are you were looking for entirely state schools or independent schools as well? Is it also mainly at the 11+ age or younger/ older?

The main schools tend to be:

The Latymer School in Edmonton
Queen Elizabeth's School
St Michael's Catholic School in North Finchley
Dame alice owen
Watford

But Latymer+ DAO have a catchment area so depends on where you live but the Tiffin schools don't and often people move closer to the school they've won a place at.

Have you heard of the academies bill? Most selective schools seem to have either converted already or are in the process of converting. If you're dead set against academies you may have to rule out many good schools.

Grammar Schools that have converted to Academy Status

Girl or boy?

Girls Greycoats school in Westminister - girls only. Its a specialist language school, comprehensive - walking distance from Victoria Station, (some) kids travel from SE London to get there. Very good results. Complicated admissions criteria. Some places (15) are aptitude for languages, some church membership.

Inga why don't you say what you are looking for in the first place?

And what is "central London"?

Why don't you try putting postcode and radius into the school performance tables on the education.gov website and seeing what you get? You can then read OFSTED reports etc and see what you like the look of. And if you are interested in the independent sector too look on the relevant websites.

Then when you've got some schools in mind that you like the look of that way, ask on here what people think about them if that matters to you.

Are you still ruling out academies / potential academies? You are going to have a big problem if you do!!

When you look for secondary schools in London it helps looking at the borough you live in and perhaps neighbouring boroughs as well. The borough's website should have details of the secondary schools, you may not necessarily find private schools on their lists. If you ask your council I am sure they'll be able to tell you in full detail about the schools! :D Also you could have a look at the BBC league tables to see how the schools perform and read Ofsted reports, however I would not solely rely on those. At the moment many secondary schools are having open days so make sure you visit some with your son! You can also often make appointments to visit them during the day. :D
