Please can someone explain

Post by Pudding »

My daughter took her 11plus last year. There where two papers both NFER one verbal and one non verbal. She has since declined the place in favour of another school so they have given her her scores which are 141 and 130 a total of 271. The pass mark was 220.

This means nothing to me what so ever, can someone explain in plain simple terms please. I have been advised to tell her new school as she is apparently very bright. She obviously doesn't get her brains form either her dad or myself.

She never had any lessons, only a few practice papers over the summer hols for the test in September, as most people seem to be interested on these points.

Many thanks in advanced

Very good scores, could not find a nice graph, but,

From the distribution of the standardised scores:

The top 2% nationally will have a standardised score of 130 or above.
The top 5% nationally will have a standardised score of 125 or above.
The top 10% nationally will have a standardised score of 120 or above.
The top 30% nationally will have a standardised score of 108 or above.
The top 50% nationally will have a standardised score of 100 or above.

A Standardised Score of 130, i.e. two standard deviations above the average score, is generally considered the minimum score for the designation of 'mentally gifted'

Guest - your explanation assumes mean is 100 and standard deviation 15 - not all are standardised like this!!
