Hi,

I have recently learned that DS sat PIPS tests in yr 5. I have his scores for Mathematics and Reading. But I have no idea what they mean. So, preferably, I'd like to understand what is the mean and the standard deviation. eg. in CAT testing, it is well-known that they are "scaled" (and specifically for the candidate's age) so that the average (ie. mean) is 100 and the "spread" is such that 68% of students lie between 90 and 110 (in technical terms, the "Standard deviation" is 10). But the scores in the PIPS tests do not appear to lie anywhere on this scale. So, what would a PIPS score of (say) 60 in Reading mean?

Can anybody shed any light on this, or point me to some tables or standards for these tests (I looked online without success).

Thanks, CO.

Dear Tiffinboys,

Thanks - that's perfect. The mean is 50 and the standard deviation (spread) is 10.

Cheers, CO.
