Lucky you. Sadly for us Devon is a bit far.

I know these are just numbers, but quoting from this years (2009/2010) "Essex guide to transfering from primary to secondary school":-

BOYS
CGRS (Colchester) Applications received for Sept 08=542 for 96 places(5.64 apps per place)
KEGS (Chelmsford) Sept 08 =710 for 112 places(6.34 apps per place)

GIRLS
CCHH (Colchester) Sept 08=541 for 112 places (4.83 apps per place)
CCHS (Chelmsford) Sept 08 =679 for 120 places (5.66 apps per place)

This suggests that for last year at least, there were more applications for the Chelmsford schools. Unfortunately there is no info on the Southend schools in this booklet.

We have 3 boys grammar schools in Sutton

Sutton Grammar School 1255 applications for 120 places (10.45 applications per place
Wallington Grammar School 585 applications for 120 places (1539 sat the test but results out before CAF needed filling)
Wilsons School 1250 applications for 145 places (8.62 applications per place)

Now I realise why I felt so stressed
