I think it would be impossible for them to rank the students and give firm guarantees without knowing how many of the students taking the test will be applying to the school. Even though Bexley top scores are guaranteed a place at a Bexley grammar school it does not specify which school and being that due to he number of places on offer in the 4 Bexley schools, they are able to offer that guarantee. With one school it is different, as there are only a limited number of spaces to start with so they cannot offer guarantees to the first 116 without knowing that the top 116 are putting St Olaves as their first choice in the application. Also as someone else pointed out it is unfair for one school to offer a guarantee of a place before National Offer Day in march when everyone else gets offered.

Yes appreciate that they cannot guarantee a place.

However, surely they have used some criteria to decide:
- how many letters would be in the "likely" category - Top 116? Top 126? (as based on past experience usually at least 10 of the top places offered are not taken up - 10 is just an arbitrary number I have used) Top 150?
- how many letters would be in the "probably" category - Next 10? Next 20? Next 30?

It would be helpful if they could shed some light on the criteria used to issue "likely" & "probably" letters and how many such letters have been issued.

Also statistics from past few years of the rank of the lowest ranked candidate who eventually managed to secure a place after the various rounds (March 1st and subsequent rounds) would be very helpful to minimise the anxiety and make an informed judgement at this point in time.
