Hi all, my DS, did reasonably well considering all, but he is short of a grade to be accepted into the sixth form, they require 7 grades Bs or As, and he has 6, it used to be 6, but they changed it this year. We are appealing and he has a good chance of getting in because he has the support of the housemaster and headteacher. The reason for this post is whether there is an examiner on the forum that can advise me on remarks, my DS thinks he has been unfairly marked for his Physics he got a C, and narrowly missed by 1 point so he says because i honestly do not understand the marking boundaries, he tried to explain but he is adamant that he missed by 1 point. Is it really worth remarking or just leave it, his mark is 279 and points 40 if that makes any sense.

Thanks

you can look up the grade boundaries for GCSEs - which board is it?

edit : edexcel for example - the grade boundaries are:

total marks: 400
A* 360
A 320
B 280
C 240

so if he has 279 then he is one mark of a B ...

I would get the physics remarked. I would also use it to argue for a place in VIth form as he is so close. Remarks cost around £25 pounds, some schools charge an admin fee on top. The fee is refunded in the state sector if the mark goes up.

I would agree with going for a remark if you can afford it. Nothing to lose with a remark as already has a C and very unlikely to lose enough marks to go down a grade if he is only one mark away. Remarks vary in cost-they can be as much as £50 per paper, depending on the board (think Edexcel is £39 per paper), but you do get a refund if your grade changes. If he sat more than one paper the school should know the individual marks and advise which paper it is worth having remarked

I would agree with using this with your discussions with the school -that he is only 1 mark away from their standard, and that may change with the remark
