Cambridge Latin Certificate Level 2

Post by Daogroupie »

How is this considered compared to the GCSE and is OCR the only board that offers the GCSE? Does anyone know the main differences between the Cambridge Latin Certificate Level 2 and the OCR GCSE? Thanks DG

The main difference is that whilst most GCSE students sit two language and two literature papers, the Certificates are 100% language.

Thank you Sally. Would you know if it is more common to do the Certificate or the GCSE? Is WJEC the only board to offer the GCSE? DG

DS is doing the WJEC. It is equivalent to two GCSEs. One in language and one in literature, culture and civilisation. School have assured me that it is a well regarded qualification.

Thank you, that is most helpful. Do you know the course code? Does it have any course work? Does it offer January and June Sittings or just June? How many hours teaching a week does it involve? How is he finding it? Thank you. We are considering doing this privately as school only offers the Level 2 Certificate. DG

He just has the standard number of lessons per fortnight that any optional subject has. I've no idea of the codes. I think he's finding it ok, but there is some work involved! Something DS doesn't take to naturally. It has been less work than accelerated Russian, which has been quite a tough call in two years!

In order together the equivalent of two GCSEs you would need to sit two certificates. Interestingly the Certificates do not fulfil the language requirement of the EBacc, whilst the GCSE does.

DS is doing a single GCSE in Latin - OCR

He seems to be finding it OK at the moment but he is only 1 term in so it's still early days.
