Sorry to hijack thread, but for what reasons do people generally request a remark? When DS received his 2 results this year the envelope contained forms and costs for remarking and copies of papers but no advice on why we might want to do so.(we are happy and not going for a remark but I am curious!)

Schools often have their own deadlines which are earlier.

We would request this if we felt the marking scheme was not applied correctly.

Sometimes if you are just below the border for a grade then a remark can raise you to a grade.

Sometimes a remark can raise the mark by 10 UMS! I know of many able pupils who have been inaccurately marked. At AS/A2 this is the difference between gaining a university place or not.

English/RE are well known for successful remarks.

It is in the exam board's interest to raise the grade as otherwise there may be appeals, etc. However, the mark can always go down, so a remark is not a good idea if you are at the lower end of the grade boundary.

My DS got a B at IGCSE despite being predicted A*/A.
He was 3 marks away from an A so we have applied for a remark.
I have heard that it isn't a good idea to ask for a remark unless it's only 1 or 2 marks from grade boundary but figured we had nothing to lose ( except the £40 fee).
If he doesn't get up to an A can he re- take it in Nov?

Last year My DD's school paid for anyone who had just missed an English grade to be remarked. This was because of the what happened then with the changing of thresholds etc.
Sadly my DD who was 2 marks of off an A remained a B, although I did work out that had she scored the same in January she would have got an A.

anyway..

That's a shame Steve.
I am more or less resigned to it staying the same but have heard of remarks going up 10 UMS so felt we should give it a try .
