My DS maths teacher also says not a good idea to do GCSE a year ahead and the main reason given is that in A levels the maths grades go down for kids who take the exam in year 10 as presumably they have had a year not really concentrating in maths.

Not sure if the argument has any validity but the teacher's point of view I guess. :)
