To be perfectly honest he doesn't have much of a clue what he wants to do at the moment!! I think he is genuinely interested in Ec onomics and thought a degree was the obvious choice. However he has long-talked about a career in Business/Finance and I know there are lots of related degree courses that might suit better. At the moment we are just encouraging him to keep options open and I think his subject choices reflect that.

this is a choice one has to clearly think about and figure out - there shouldn't be any pressure about it because both classes are really great, interesting and important. I once decided to make my A Level in Physics because it suited me more and I was more confident with Physics then I was with Chemistry back then. I think it is all about being confident about talking about certain topics in a subject.

I would say Chemistry, but then I am biased....

Physics is also good

(Physical Chemistry is even better!)

For years had a sticker on my door ..cuddle a chemist and get a reaction

or as the old saying goes.. (about school experiments i believe!)

If it wriggles, it's Biology
if it stinks, it's Chemistry
if it doesn't work, it's Physics

Decision has been made ready for tomorrow and it's Physics!! Many thanks for all the input, it certainly helps to have this forum as an extra, independent opinion!!

Just want him to get to school tomorrow with his decision, then it's definite!

Bit late now but you definitely don't need economics to read economics at university. I have a degree in economics (from Cambridge) and have worked as a professional economist and didn't even start until my second year.

Its true that lots of courses are very mathematical now (to do financial modelling in the city) though there must be some more political science courses. You will definitely need maths.

Personally I would have dropped the economics and done chemistry and physics -even to read economics. Having said that that's course I started out on in the sixth from and got bored because the subjects were too similar (especially maths and physics). The further maths was good advice but there is the slight caveat that you have to be a good mathematician! Be warned though about modern university economics courses and many jobs for economists - they are simply applied mathematicians, building models.
