Critical thinking?

I would be very cautious about doing the science with no maths at all. Does your daughter have any idea what she wants to do on leaving school? I suspect that almost any science based course will require more than GCSE maths. Presumably with English she can do an English degree - but what else? I think that a more important question than the critical thinking is the balance of core subjects that she intends to take.

I constantly tell my daughter to focus on 'not closing doors'. What doors are open to her with the combination that she proposes and how could she open some more? Alternatively is she quite satisfied that there are plenty open? I suspect that her teacher's advice of AS maths is sound.
