DD is filling out an application form to change sixth forms as we speak. She wants to change schools because her current school doesn't offer the course in RS that she wishes to take.

She is proposing to take her A levels in: English Literature, Ancient History, RS and French.

Do these subjects make a good combination please (she thinks she may study PPE and go into Politics, or Marketing and PR, but really has no firm idea, so hopefully the choices cover a wide entry requirement).

Quite a heavy load, essay wise! But great choices!

There is certainly a great deal of reading and essay writing involved - has she spoken to anyone at the school about the workload?

Essay writing happens to be her 'thing'.

She did speak to some tutors at proposed new sixth on Saturday, one said it sounded an interesting combination, but none implied it would be a heavy workload.

DD knows it involves lots of essays, she seems quite happy about it though.

Oh, and she's also considering doing an EPQ if she moves - good/bad idea.

Looks like good choices (essays permitting )

DS dd EPQ in year 12/13 and DD in year 11 - both got v good marks and I think it helped confidence and stuff to talk about in personal statement etc

Compulsory at DD's school and she has loved doing it as it has to be on a subject area they aren't directly studying. I have been really impressed with the research skills she has developed and the breadth and depth of knowledge she has acquired. She has to give a presentation on it and I am genuinely surprised at how good it is. So yes, I would say go for it - it is a lot more use than a General Studies qualification and may fire her up in ways she doesn't envisage, and there is so little scope for personal independent research these days it has got to be good.

Agree that the workload for your DD looks heavy but they are a good solid set of choices and if she knows what she wants to do, then she must go with it. French shouldn't be essay-heavy. A friend is doing the other 3 and groaning already (lower sixth) under the workload but still glad he did them.

Actually, a question has arisen over the history aspect. Is there any difference between History and Ancient History as a facilitating subject?
