11 Plus Exams Forum

My son has just started 6th form, he is currently doing AS maths, FM, English, biology and music. I wanted him to do 4 but that's another story.
He wants to do maths at university and has read somewhere ( I don't know where) that he should be doing chemistry as that would make him a stronger candidate.
Does anyone think he should swap the English for chemistry ?
He does have a*s in all if them for gcse I know term has started and he would have to catch up.
He doesn't believe me when I say it cannot be necessary to need chem to study maths !

Thank heavens he is my last child, I have had enough, he is also immature, think he is becoming a tantruming teenager at last.

Please somebody tell me that with great as results he will get offers from great universities without chemistry.

If anything I'd go for physics. I guess you need to look at various uni admissions requirements. Maybe he is mixing up a requirement for chemistry with its possible desire ability.

Check the entry requirements for likely universities. Here are some I randomly picked, to give you an idea:

Looks unlikely that you would need chemistry for maths.

He's not so fussed about physics tbh, I think he preferred chemistry. Thanks tinkers.

Son number one's friend's brother (phew...corrected) is studying maths at Birmingham uni, he sat maths, fm, biology and geography. He wished he had dropped biology, it is a very popular choice, and done something else entirely that was a bit different.

English is a great A level to have under his belt and what he learns will serve him well through his life, and give him smug points when discussing literature at social functions! How many lads do a level English, compared to the sciences.....it will give him an edge!

This is what I keep saying - the breadth of subjects is great , but he looks at me like I am losing the plot -which I have to say, I am!!
He finally decided on day one of the 6th form that these were his choices, after flirting with history instead of FM , and I thought we were on course.
None of my older ones have done maths at uni,but I would have thought the only subjects required would be maths and fm.
Then again, none of the others had a clue what they wanted to do at the start of year 12, both of my daughters actually asked me to choose at one stage or another.
My older son decided mid way through year 12, although did take up geography just before the half term in October so we have some form for confusion.

It's the maths and F Maths that are the most important, then maybe Physics. I've never known (and I've been teaching a long time) a university ask for Chemistry specifically.

Maths is a great degree but there is a lot of variation between courses depending on whether pure, mechanics or statistics are preferred. This will depend on what DS might want to do afterwards ...
