Just to update this thread - DS saw sense and has chosen to do maths - entirely his decision, and indeed he even produced some of the arguments that I had up my sleeve. Thanks everyone for your input - it really helped me to try to steer him gently in the right direction, and to get him to ask the right questions/do the necessary research.
