Rob Eastaway has written some great maths books - if he's into sport there's:

http://www.robeastaway.com/books/hidden ... s-of-sport" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I see his 'Why do buses come in threes?' (a great book) is now published in French

http://www.robeastaway.com/books/pourquoi-les-bus" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I would avoid any texts, unless they are general, as most A level specifications change in September.

Ben Goldacre's Bad Science is good. And in a similar vein but Mathsy - The Tiger that isn't By Andrew Dilnot and Michaal Blastland.

Both less likely to impress on the girl front than a decent risotto I would suggest.

He has the first but i will get him to look at the second.

I quite agree - a man that can cook should be very attractive :lol:

DS is out at the moment ( taking a break from the revision) but when he gets back I am thinking of suggesting a cookery book plus one of the ones that you and G55 have suggested or even an Asterix the Gaul book in French if they are still in print - off to check - I was lent some when I was doing A Level French. Would you approve Amber?

Depends on his area of interest but I have used this site before for stocking fillers.

Another vote for Sam Stern cookery books as well!

DD had a list of reading around biology type books given to her by school between GCSEs & AS. She did buy some of them, and even read them. I'll have a look & see if I can find it (I suspect chances are slim)

Other good books stores available :)

This is a specific area of biology but interesting, sound science and not too 'heavy'.

The Asterix the Gaul books are still available. I bought them for my dad last summer.

DS is also hoping (!) to do A level French from September. He's not shown any interest in novels as yet but enjoys French TV and radio, Asterix and also the French sports newspaper (is it l'Equipe?). The newspaper is great as it's about something he loves and has useful pictures so he can have a good guess at what he's reading about :lol: when the TDF starts he likes the French commentary. Having a visual reference certainly seems to help.

All very low brow / low key here :oops:
