Thanks for all the ideas! Keep them coming. Have told the lovely DS that as his A level choices are so critical he's going to have to get onto the uni websites himself, before he commits himself at school. I can't offer any intelligent comment on science subjects, which I could on classics or languages.

Re US unis: he's banned from looking at websites for anywhere foreign. The thought of him doing a year abroad is bad enough....!

The only problem with Archaeology is he's rather indoorsy sort. Can't imagine him on a dig.

I suspect that for every hour spent "in the field" by the average archaeologist many, many more hours are spent indoors, in the lab or the library, analysing the finds and the various other sources of evidence.... !
