A bit worried about the prep I'm doing with my son. Competition is so fierce. How many hour of study is everyone doing? :?

Hi! I'm very new to all this and am very confused. My son wants to do the 11+ but I haven't a clue about where to start. Any pointers in the right direction would be fantastic and greatly appreciated. Also, is it imperative to get a tutor?
Thanks in advance.
