How many new words can a child really learn in a year?

Just been told by my son's tuition centre that their target is to learn 4,0000 new words before he takes the exam next September! I'm quite shocked if I'm honest and wanted to hear others views. In my opinion there's a limit on how many new words they can realistically learn & I don think this limit is 4,000 in what effectively is only 10 months. Any thoughts anyone?

I just read somewhere that children between 9 and 12 years old learn about 1,500-3,000 new words a year anyway, and also that 15 minutes of reading a day could help a child learn 1,000 new words a year (we're talking about passive vocabulary of course). So with a bit of extra focus I'd say yes, it's possible.
