Have decided to get a tutor for my child for year 5 (currently in year 4) to help him to be confident and feel that he can do his best in new style 11+ exam in. Buckinghamshire.

Some tutors have long waiting lists. I managed to get him on 2 lists about 1.5yrs ago . One tutor does a pre-assessment and inevitably picks the candidates that she feels are best placed to be able to cope with the tuition work and grammar school life. Purportedly she gives a lot of homework. The other tutor is non-selective and is a bit more relaxed and does not provide as much homework.

I have been contacted by non-selective tutor for a non-refundable holding deposit. Meantime the selective tutor has confirmed that my child has a place with her. I am wondering which tutor to go with -I'd like to keep options open for as long as possible as it feels early to decide which approach and therefore which tutor might be best for my child, but feeling guilty about holding onto a place that could go to someone else ....

Anyone have any experience /views on this ?

Have you checked with these tutors what they cover & what materials are used. Remember the Bucks 11 plus changed this year and is supposed to be more tutor proof. There are no sample papers available. Ask both tutors what they intend to teach & what materials they will use. Any assessments done by the selective tutor will have been based on the old test (presumably) since no-one knew until about this time last year who was going to set the new tests (CEM). There is a sticky at the top of the Buckinghamshire section about CEM preparation.
