What methods do you tend use to teach times tables to the children you teach?

My daughter is 9yrs (Yr 5) and only seems to know her 2x and 10x so far (they do not recite them at school).

We have been practising the 4x this week but what should I do next: is it best to follow on with related tables i.e. 8x and 12x or is this more confusing for a child and should I pick a completely different one?

How long should we spend on each one, e.g. a few days/ week/ fortnight/more and should I leave a gap between each one for her mind to "absorb" what she's learned.

Although my daughter achieved a level 4B in her Yr 4 Maths SATS she seems to struggle with Mental maths e.g. when shopping with me. She would take her 11+ in Nov 2008 so we've plenty of time and don't intend to start any other work until the Spring.

Here are some links I like, because they rely on clicking rather than typing:

This one is quite hard, but ace for identifying multiples:

This one doesn't have a timer, so it's not so pressured. You can also use it for + - and /

I think this is a basic matching game, but I've got a 'Java virtual machine' error at the moment, and can't try it!

This one is similar:

With this one you have to turn your space station to shoot meteors. Practises factors:

you beat me to it Y

I love meteor multiplication!!

A pack of cards os useful too.
deal 2 at a time and the first person to multiply them together and get the correct answer wins.

You can adapt it, by varying speed, imposing time limit, including the picture cards etc..

My son uses a certain game machine with a brain training programme that is excellent for speed and accuracy. In fact, have just been to Parents Evening tonight and he is top of his year in maths due to his quick fire answers. He does 10 mins every morning to warm his brain up for his mental maths tests at school. It has reaped rewards.

I know the one you mean - highly recommended. It's been very useful to my two. Don't neglect to practise large numbers though, since this system only goes to 9X

And if you're doing tables, then keep on going to 15 times. Incredibly helpful for mental maths!

OK, I don't understand the rules now.

I post a link to some free resources I've used in school for learning tables, but have the posting removed - yet others do the same for other resources (that are still also on commercial sites) and nothing happens...

never mind.
