My daughter is taking the entrance exam for above school this coming saturday.

We know that the test consists of 2 nfer verbal reasoning papers and i have been devouring information from this invaluable website for the last 5 months.

As this is the only girls grammar school in Shropshire, ( with an intake of 56), places are naturally very precious and inside information scarce.

I would be so grateful if anybody could write with tips regarding timing of papers, number of questions etc.

Many Thanks

hopefully things will get better - used to be a much smaller intake there (about 30) until a while ago.
fraid I don't know much - do they use the same set up as Adam's?

No, Newport is administered by the LEA and girls living in Newport are given first consideration, after which places are offered to girls from surrounding areas ( this applies to us).

Adams is a foundation school offering around 100 places, some of which are boarding.

Their exam consists of vr, nvr as well as maths and they take the boys with the highest results regardless of where they live.

We do know that the exam is 2 x 1 hour vr and I have fervently followed advice on this website regarding practice papers, AFN, The Tutors, Bright Sparks and of course NFER.

Not sure if the exam will include 15 or 21 types so have obviously covered all with my daughter.

She is 10 and a half and is doing key stage 3 level 5-7 maths papers at school. Wish the exam also had a maths paper.

Thank you for replying.

How did she get on today?

Hi Hiddlydiddly,

She says that both papers were remarkably easy in comparison with practice papers that she has done: ( this worries me somewhat ).
75 questions in one hour and seemingly just the 15 question types.

She went to the cinema this afternoon and is now completely relaxed.

I have to admit that I couldn't sleep last night but she's completely unaware of this.
Must mention that the organisation today regarding entrance and exit of the building ( Harper Adam's University) was not too efficient or reassuring, but again probably only from a neurotic mum's viewpoint.

There's no pressure here as only 56 places and the alternative schools are relatively good, but she'd love to go to Newport.

Thanks for asking anyway and do you have a personal knowledge of this school?.

My daughter also sat this exam today. She said it was "okay" and had time for checking her paper (fortunate as she discovered a whole section where she'd put the wrong answers). Discussions in the car afterwards revealed she had got at least one question wrong.

She also said it was set by NFER but wasn't quite like any of the other NFER papers she'd done. I think it a little strange that they don't make them do a maths paper as the school specialises in maths and computing.

Do you know if the school ask for reports from all the applicants or just the ones that pass the exams? I would have thought the latter but the letter implied not.

Dear Res Mum,

I totally agree about the maths, especially with it being a specialist school in that subject.

May I ask, did your daughter feel the test to be easier than others she's sat for?

Regards

Yes we are prepared to move. My husband's company may be doing a lot of work in the Telford area which is why we are applying for schools in that area as well as in Herts, Bucks. We're waiting to see what (if anything!) comes back in March. I think its a pity that the children don't get to find out how they performed in the various tests (apart from Bucks where they issue results). It seems a shame all their hard work disappears into a black hole of secrecy.

My daughter thought the VR at Newport was harder than the Herts Consortium VR paper, the Bucks test (2 VR papers) and the Wolverhampton Girls High VR paper.

She is also sitting the test for Wolverhampton Grammar in January.

My goodness Res mum, you're going to have to make many choices in the coming months with schools, houses, towns etc.

We relocated to the Telford area from Middlesex 5 years ago ( think of the house price difference between South East and here) and our eldest daughter attends a wonderful local school.
We have Thomas Telford School here which is the best performing comprehensive in the country and is also a selective school, basing admission on a multitude of criteria, not solely on acadademic ability.

I have friends whose sons attend Wolverhampton Grammar and they have nothing but praise. Wolverhampton Girls High has a wonderful reputation but I chose not to apply as we are a little too far for my daughter to benefit socially after school hours.

In answer to your question about reports from the school I would expect these to be obtained following the marking. Only 3 months now to wait for one envelope whereas I would imagine you will be receiving several.

Good Luck to your daughter with Wolverhampton Grammar as well.

p.s. my daughter also had time to check her answers thank goodness, as she had accidentally missed one out and marked the subsequent 6 answers incorrectly.

How is this possible ? What happened to living in the LEA area ?

I thought with a school taking in only 50 pupils you would need to live in the area already, to stand any chance.
