NAGTY register - what benefits does it provide?

Post by puzzled »

Have heard about this gifted and talented register. What real benefits does it provide (other than nice label)? This is not a rhetorical question, but would really like advice!

Haven't noticed any. May look good on their CV when applying for Uni? My son has been a member for two years, but so far hasn't really bothered with it. That's his choice, I have mentioned that he might benefit from attending courses but he's not interested. However, we don't get communications from NAGTY asking why he hasn't attended any courses so I don't think members are monitored for their level of participation. I honestly think that, because pupils with learning difficulties get more attention at the expense of the extremely bright pupils (in local comprehensives) the government had to come with something to show willing towards the more able. I have heard that some of the summer schools can be quite boring (lots of lecture and not much practical stuff), but there is a fairly good choice on offer.

Our daughter was identified as 'G&T' recently by year 7 CATs tests. When I asked her (new to teaching) form teacher what this meant in reality, he said 'special homework', which didn't go down well with our daughter!

However, nothing has really changed (much to our daughter's relief). I agree that all it really comes down to is a magazine once a month and some summer courses. But you can do more (online study forums, etc.) if you are motivated.
