R informed the Council that the girls of Years 7 and 8 would like to wear white hair bobbles but have been told they are not allowed. Mr C decided that as white is not a school colour, only black bobbles may be worn, as in the uniform regulations for girls published last year.

Good to hear democracy is alive & well

How about asking if they can wear white bobbles if they pay a' fine' which is donated to a charity?
Having proven that wearing white bobbles doesn't undermine the running of the school they could try again at a later date!

Or perhaps there could be a compromise, with white being introduced as a 'summer term only' colour...?

However insignificant bobbles are to school life I think schools have to take a hard line because if they give in to this then they could be pressurised into doing other things.

I agree with Tipsy; little things can lead to big ones. Let's not start undermining the teachers' authority,; rules are there for a reason no matter what we as parents think, and a bit of discipline over something relatively minor is a great lesson.

I was talking about the parents and children who want white bobbles, not the school, I agree wholeheartedly with the school taking a hard line on uniform!

Thank goodness summer rules have now kicked in..so my DD can take her blazer off in school and shock horror..walk on the school field grass.

When DS was the tender age of 4 I sent him to school in grey trousers (normally grey cord shorts) because it was snowing and we walked to school. When I picked him up he was wearing white sports shorts with his multicoloured socks looking ridiculous. They said they had to change him because the grey trousers were not school uniform. At least they were discrete unlike his white shorts and socks which were not class uniform!

Poor lad had felt embarrassed all day aswell as freezing. I asked if they could wear grey school trousers in the winter and they said no because..."you knew the uniform when you picked the school and most kids got driven to school"!

Does anyone here pick a school beacuse of its uniform?

Needless to say we moved schools (he has asthma and needs to wear trousers in the winter) but on the whole if its not a matter of health or common sense then schools should stick to their guns.
