English Word Similarity Question

Post by kidsmum »

Can anyone suggest where I can find practice for the word similarity question in the Essex English paper. For example, 'Find the word in the text which means the same as (word)?' We have tried Free Rice in the past, but that is more for word meanings and not finding a similar word. I have the CSSE papers for 2008 and 2009 only, but feel that my DS needs more practice on this particular type of question. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

try googling synonym games

synonym toast is a great game
http://www.scholastic.com/wordgirl/synonym_toast.htm

also woodlands junior
http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk ... y.html#syn

there are synonym finders online too. You could decide on a word and then see who can come up with the most synonyms in a given time eg 1 minute

Teach your child about the parts of speech. Look for ed/ly endings. Is it a verb/noun, etc.
Analysing words also helps. If it has un at the start then you could be looking for dis or another contradictory form.
i.e. without care = heedless
the suffix of less indicates the without.

This can make the synonym section much more accessible.
