Advice please on choosing RMGS or the Math school?

Post by need advice »

We are undecided on which school to put down as first choice. Both RMGS and the Math get similar academic results but seem to have a different approach/feel. The Math seems a very traditional "old school" Grammar (which in this day and age appeals to me) and RMGS seems to be more relaxed/modern in its approach, which partly I think comes from it being a mixed school. We cannot decide which would be best for our child, who is quite bright but not an academic star and is a quiet character (we are concerned that he might struggle at the Math)

We are thankful that we are choosing between two very good schools (and would be happy if he ended up at either) but just need to decide which one we think will be best and therefore 1st choice (and hope that he is accepted by one of them)

If anybody has experiences of either school, that they could share, we would be very grateful. Thanks

Hi there
Can't comment on RMGS, but have 2 at The Math...

DS1 (yr 8 ) is a quiet and studious boy. Loves school - settled well and doing well. Not very sporty but this is not a big problem as they set for games (different groups depending on the game) for example in Rugby his group concentrate more on the skills of rugby rather than always playing games, less chance of injury!

DS2 (yr 7) less academic and studious but more outgoing. He also is loving school.

They have loads of clubs on - both at lunchtimes and after school.
Although some aspects of the school are more traditional - high expectations of behaviour for example, it is a very forward thinking school and according to the boys they have a really good laugh with the teachers.

In my opinion the thing that The Math lacks is girls! I would prefer a mixed school but not enough to make the boys travel from Strood to Rainham. I think that becomes the crux of it. If you can't decide between the 2 I would suggest the closest to you. When the kids do clubs it is nice to not be too far away!

Good luck with your choice

We looked at both this week and have now made our decision - RMGS.

The Math was highly impressive at the open evening but we found the visit in the school day was more rushed.

RMGS came out on top in terms of time spent with us and the happy atmosphere in the school day.

They both appear to be excellent and quite different. Results-wise there's not a lot between them.

It depends what suits your child best. Our son is desperate to go to RMGS and after all his hard work we need to keep up that enthusiasm.
