Forum Abbreviations

Post by Sally-Anne »

There are a lot of abbreviations that turn up on this forum and others, and they can be confusing for newcomers.

I would like to get a comprehensive list together to post under Forum Rules, so please contribute with any that you can think of.

To start the ball rolling:

EPE = ElevenPlusExams
Mod = Moderator
DC = Dear/Darling Child (Occasionally "dreadful, disobedient, depressing, difficult ..." etc)
DS = " Son
DD = " Daughter
DH = " Husband
OH = Other Half

Funnily enough I don't think I have ever seen anyone use "DW" for "Darling Wife"! :?

GS = Grammar School
Indie = Independent School/Independent section of this Forum
SATs = Standard Assessment Tests
CATs = Cognitive Ability Tests

IMO = In my opinion
IMHO = In my humble opinion
HTH? = Hope that helps?
LOL = Laughing out Loud (also "Lots of Love"!)
ROFL = Rolling On the Floor Laughing
ROFLMAO = Rolling on The Floor Laughing My *** Off
TBH = To Be Honest

... over to you!

One that took me awhile to work out was KFC. I was thinking of a certain fried poultry establishment until I figured out it stood for Keep(ing) Fingers Crossed!

IIRC and FWIW useful to be reminded about! and the swimming one. I actually find emoticons horribly useful, too. I hate them in real life, and NEVER use LOL etc, but to try to ensure that you are conveying general cheeriness when making a point you fear SOMEone will leap on, they are sans pareil.
