How To Request Marks From BV, HG

Post by Luluco »

We sadly didn't get offered any of our 6 choices, really don't know why our 3rd choice local comp was not offered? Instead we were offered a place at an inner city specialist college! I want to know the scores of my son's test at BV and HG because he passed for Solihull School and is considered very bright.
Do I request from the schools directly or the BCC?

really sorry to hear that luluco.

bv scores/position on waiting list can be requested from Birmingham school admissions.

hg scores/position i'm not entirely sure but possibly from the school itself.

good luck.

My son missed out on HG by 1 mark, and BV by 6 marks. So upset about this as he got into Solihull Independent, and gained a scholarship with St George Independent school. Feel so sad, and don't know what to do now. :!:

Hi Isymum

Sorry to hear about your disappointment. Why not appeal to HG? Missing out on 1 mark hopefully gives you a chance of getting on the waiting list. Remember that several people will turn down their offers.

If nothing works out - please remember that there is every chance he can fulfill his potential at a normal comprehensive. Good Luck.

Isymum,

With one mark away, I am fairly confident he will get into Handsworth Grammar from the waiting list. Not so sure about BV, however, because there are going to be quite a few children before him.

Thank you fm and ZA. Still very upset over things, had to come home from work. I don't know how my son is bearing up. I just can't get round to him passing the Solihull independent school and 2 other ones one where he has gained scholarship with.

Don't know if there is a way of getting the papers re-marked. Now its my daughter's turn to start preparing, if you guys have any advise for what i can help her with, would be much appreciated, ie. books, resources or even tutors around Birmingham. thanks

Hello Isymum,
Sorry to read your news. I have sent you a pm with details of the tutor we used in Sutton Coldfield. Best of luck with HG & your DD next year.

The Solihull test is examining quite different things to the KE, Sutton and Handsworth entrance tests.

I have had pupils pass the Solihull test who would have little chance of passing KE or Sutton, both of which feature non-verbal and reasonably high level maths.

Basically different exams play to different children's strengths.

I also have reason to believe it was harder to achieve a pass at Handsworth this year than normal. In a sense, this can only be a good thing for the boys going there this year as the general standard will be higher for that year.

Hang on in there, Isymum. The skills that had your child passing Solihull etc. will make him one of the more able students at HG which he is bound to get in from the waiting list. First 40 from waiting list have made it in the past!

Passing an entrance exam is one thing, doing well at secondary school is quite a different thing.
