Reading Boys - Y9 Entry & Exam

I wondered if anybody could help me with some information about the entry into Y9 at Reading Boys.I wondered if anybody knows on average how many take this exam, when the exam is in the year and anything else about it ? Do the Y9 entrants settle in well ?



Also I would be very grateful if anybody could recommend a tutor .

Just checked and the "designated area" of postcodes does apply to 13+.

Boys take the exam in January of year 8 for September entry into year 9.

One source told me it was about fifty boys chasing the twelve places.

My DS1 is in year 9 and he says the three new boys in his form group have settled in well, they all seem to have something in common however tenuous mine worked out that he had been at the same nursery school as one of the new boys. A team mate of DS1 from club rugby started in year 9 this September and chatting to his dad his son is enjoying the new challenge at Reading school.

Some issues arise in specific subjects but they can be caught up or dropped at GCSE choice time.

I think you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain, so go for it.

Entrance Tests
The entrance tests will be taken at Reading School.
There will be three tests each of length approximately one hour.
They will cover i) Mathematics
ii) English
and iii) Science.
The tests will be based on the National Curriculum and will be such that no additional preparation is necessary. No past
papers are available and no further information with respect to the tests will be given. No allowance will be made for a pupil’s
age.

I would look at a bit of DIY, the successful boy I know used CGP books to skim through KS3 in Maths/English/Science and fill in the gaps. IIRC somewhere it states the science is not a test of knowledge but ability.

A general KS3 tutor(s) should be able to help with these subjects or a tutor familiar with 13+ common entrance type exams.

Have searched the web but am finding it difficult to find a suitable tutor.

Any advice on books to use?

13+ is a small market so unlikely you will find an expert, common entrance (13+) is close, or KS3 maths/english/science......

I would look at the KS3 CGP books, IIRC some where the school say the science is not a test of knowledge (facts) but of understanding and ability.

As for the number of seats available for the Yr 9 entry, is it 12 seats every year or does it vary?

It is twelve per year with a waiting list that does move a bit, designated area or boarding rules apply.
