Level 6 Maths

Post by Daogroupie »

I have tested my dd on Level 6 maths papers which you can find on the past papers website which is listed on the sticky on the top of the maths section. There are only a few past papers as they stopped producing them in 2002, apparently so few children were passing them it was a waste of resources. Level 4-6 KS3 papers will not really help you as that is different material. Our school offers top table children the chance to try out a Level 6 maths paper at the end of the summer term just to give them something that is actually challenging as some of them have had KS2 marks in the high 90's for a year before the sats. I think an optional Level 6 maths paper should be available. the standard Level 4/5 paper is just laughable for children who have been sitting eleven plus exams.

Hi there. Room for a newbie?

It would be great for those children who enjoy the challenge to be able to take a harder paper. I agree. My daughter is strange enough to be the sort of child who would love to try a level 6 paper. I have a feeling that she, too, has been promised the chance to take one 'for fun' later this year.

Some feedback:

I have now got single level 6 papers from the maths section (thanks guest55) and level 4-6 KS3 papers (bought online) and have worked through a couple with my ds who is really into maths and i have to say the ks3 papers are the best as they cover loads more info they start at a comfortable level and then go onto challenge more broadly than the single level papers and i would suggest that if anyone wants to challenge their year 6 kids who are are getting easy level 5s on the ks2 paper then these are better than the single level 6 papers which are a bit narrow. Also presumably the ks3 papers will be a better prep for secondary school

other feedback welcome

which papers did you buy, Tree?? want to keep my boy onwards and upwards. He has holes in his knowledge and great leap forwards and since was a 5 in Y5 won't be getting much attention until at secondary school methinks.

this was the 4-6 ks3 range although i bought them online i dont want to advertise but if you type 'ks3 4-6' into google are plenty of options

otherwise guest55's link to single level 6 papers is:

hmm.. interesting Milla, exactly what I'm afraid of. Tried my DS on a KS2 level 6 Maths paper the other day in which he got 21/30 - a level 6. At parents evening I asked what level he was at and she said she couldn't' tell me but he was on track to get a level 5 next year :!: I guess without the level 6 option there's no more room to add any value :x I'm going to try him on few more of the KS3 4-6 papers - in case it was a fluke  and then go have another chat.

How's your DS getting on with the papers? Have you found any value in using them?

Genuinely puzzled as to why anyone would do this!
