Division by units please help!

Post by Cosmos »

The task is to write the answer of the division with fraction reminders.
95/6
The answer to me is 15.83 when you make 0.83 into fraction I get 83/100 The book states that the answer is 15 5/6 :?
Anyone, any ideas please?
Thanks

It is a case of doing it like old fashioned division ....
ie 6 goes in 95, 15 times remainder 5

so 95 = 15 5/6

Thanks for your reply BW, but how do you simplify 83/100 to 5/6?

I can see the confusion and feel I may add to it. :) Was it a multiple choice answer question?

95/6

I think the question would have helped if it asked to simplify the fraction into a whole number and fractional remainder, I am sure there is a better way of expressing that. :)

95 contains 15 lots of six ( being 90 ) and 5/6 left over (remainder).

15.83 is correct but over complicated, using long division, or looks like using a calculator and then converting back to a fraction?

Where did this question come from?

Hi Stevew61,
No it wasn't a multiple choice answer question.

I think the question would have helped if it asked to simplify the fraction into a whole number and fractional remainder

Yes, that exactly what they asked for. You divide 95/6, answer 15.83 and then you convert the decimal reminder into a fraction. How can you simplify 83/100?
This question is taken from a Carol's Vorderman's maths book.

Thanks for your time.

Just tried DS1's calculator it kept saying equals 95/6 :) , gave up and found a simple calculator, which gives 15.833333 3 recurring?

So 90 plus 5/6 is more accurate than 15.83, is your calculator set to round answers to two decimal places?

Don't use a calculator.
...____
6/95

6 into 9 = 1 rem 3

Carry 3

6 into 35 = 5 rem 5

Therefore answer is 15 rem 5

The rem would be written as 5/6

This is great! thanks a lot everyone.
Just a very last question to Bewildered, I wasn't clear on your last step: the rem 5 is written 5/6?
