Post by pingu »

Hi all,I'm new to the forum!Need your expert advice for this question.

What is 1/2 of 1/3 of 1/4?
How do I explain it to DS in the simplest terms?

Need a birthday cake divided up into 24 pieces - a quarter is 6 pieces, a third of that is 2 pieces and half of that is 1 piece or 1/24 of the whole cake:

the sum is actually 1/2 * 1/3 * 1/4 = 1/24

it's definitely the way to think of it because initially you can't get that you are timings-ing, it's just that you are because in timings-ing fractions you are getting a smaller fraction as a bigger number at the bottom (with only a one on top - you can tell I'm a natural with maths lingo!) attests.
Just think of it as that ole pizza or birthday cake, a third of a quarter of a half or whatever it was and once you can see it, it all makes more sense.
I know, I know, Herman made it all make proper, grown up, sense. But I'm a recent convert to "getting it!" and was a bit excited and had to join in.
