The way of working it out is:

X = (2/7 + 3/5 - 1/2) divided by 3

I hope that helps

um... 3x = 2/7 +3/5 -1/2
3x = (20+42 -35)/70
3x=27/70
x=9/70 ugh where have I gone wrong?

left side find a common fraction, so

10/35 + 21/35 = 3x + 1/2

31/35 = 3x + 1/2 (make it easy to take away the half)

62/70 - 35/70 = 3x

27/70 = 3x

9/70 = x

messy numbers but using equivalent fractions which is KS2.

Can I just query the last step in your calculations ( I may be wrong).

In the last stage, you divide by 3.

27/70 x 1/3 = 27/210

= 9/30

= 3/10

Its a long time since I've done fractions, so I may be wrong!

Here goes (I may be wrong so I stand to be corrected!)

(1.5 + x)/2 = 3x

x2 1.5 + x = 6x

1.5 = 6x - x

1.5 = x (6-1)

1.5 = 5x

1.5/5 = x

Now I'm stuck! (use a calculator!)

I read q as (1.5 + x)/2 = 3
In this case then, 1.5 + x = 6
Then x = 4.5
