Appeal - Ermysteds, Ripon Grammar, relocating Kent to Yorks

Post by nitram »

Hi, we're reloacting fron Kent to Yorkshire due to work. Job starts in June. One parent will live in Yorks until the family, 2+2, move over summer holidays. We prefer that our children finish the full term. Our house is under offer and we will rent in the catchment area of the school. We cant give a local address yet.

Our son passed the 11+ in Kent (100% score) and was going to selective grammar in our town. We have now declined this place. He took the Nth Yorks selection test over Easter and scored 255, which is well above their criteria.

We applied for both Nth Yorks selective grammar schools, knowing we would have to appeal. The appeal documents have now arrived and we have a deadline of 26 May to reply.

So we are appealing on oversubscription - schools have admitted greater nos over MAL. Our son is academically suitable, especially in maths/science which suits both schools. He is good at sports and art, and will thrive given the right conditions. We are moving into the area for work and no other reason.

We will provide evidence of new job, house sale and obvious recommendations from school, art and sports clubs.

We will not be able to have any other representative than ourselves at the appeal.

We also have our youngest who is going into year 3 to consider.

Have we forgotten any important points or could rephrase any of them?

Hi - good luck! Let us know when you get the dates. Can only really comment on Ermysted's lots of the lads there are from far flung places, - many having moved while the kids were at junior school - so the problem will be well recognised...

re your year 3 child - probably the best primaries are Water Street nr Ermysted's and ben rhydding / all saints / sacred heart in ilkley. Kettlewell, Burnsall and Boyle and Petyt are wonderfully located but v small classes.

You have to demonstrate why this school is the right school for your son. The facts are:
GS standard - proven.
Maths / Science - any reports / letters from school etc..
Sports - again letters / reports.

re representation - friends I have known go to appeal here (non qualification only) have found them very helpful and good at making people feel at their ease. I don't think any wished they had someone representing them. One said that the LEA rep deliberatlely let her have the last word (a non qual so different from yours) he said "do you think S would cope at the school" .. Oh yes says mother...

obvious recommendations from school ..... art and sports clubs.
Not sure about this. If the aim is to show your son is a 'good egg', then it's not a relevant consideration, and it would be better to take the letters with you to the hearing, and produce them only if it seems appropriate. (Extra-curricular interests can be a favourite 'filler' question at appeals.)

If the aim is to match your son's interests with something the school specialises in, then that would be very relevant for an oversubscription appeal.

Good luck!

Etienne is right .. In the absence of fell running and the trombone, the main specialism of the school is Science.

All do separate science GCSE ( I think the option to do the dual award was there but discouraged).

So is it pointless in submitting any academic information other than science and also pointless in submitting any information relating to sporting achievements? Is it also irrelevant providing information on why we are relocating to the county?

If it is then our appeal argument is relativley short and simple.

Is it not relevant to be able to give the panel a snapshot of the little boy, or are they meant to be just a statistic?

Specialisms seem to be just a means of funding and should not be the only criteria taken into consideration. Most schools we have viewed have almost the same facilities.

You asked for advice, and we're just trying our best to point you in the right direction .........

I've no particular knowledge of the schools you're interested in, but the odds are against most appeals succeeding. Your son has already proved himself worthy of a place by his test result. That is not the issue.

The law is quite clear: you have to state your reasons for wanting a place at the school in question, and the panel will decide whether they are sufficiently strong to outweigh any prejudice to the school.

Have you read the Q&As?

Hi Nitram...

I think that the appeal panel will accept that your DS has passed the exam with a very good score, they will not be choosing him over others, it will be a case of deciding whether they can take an extra one (which they have in the past) - he has already passed the academic hurdle.

If you had known when you filled in the CAF that you would be moving and had been able to put EGS down at that time, he would have got a place, even though you were in Kent - as this year all who passed and put them first got places regardless of distance.

I think it is important to demonstrate that you are genuinely moving to the area, that you are keen to get a GS education for your DS as you had planned to do in Kent, that you started the process as soon as you knew - hence the late application and that whichever school you are appealing to is the best school for him..

It is all an incredibly frustrating process - the kids are all wonderful and it feels so unfair that we can't take all that into account. it is particularly difficult for you moving at this stage .. I really hope it all works out for you.

Yes I've read as much as I can find in the relevant sections and thank everyone for their input. Our case is a bit more complicated due to relocating and timescales, and was hoping that someone may have help in this aspect.

nitram, FWIW my advice is to be gentle on yourself at this very stressful time (and also on those who are trying to help you  ) Moving in itself is extremely stressful and trying to ensure that your children get into the right schools equally so. Do bear all of this in mind and eat chocolate, drink chardonnay whatever your preference. :)

The fact that you can demonstrate that you are relocating for a bona fide reason and already had a grammar school place offer is surely in your favour.

Why not spend a little more time looking at the prospectuses/ websites of your target schools and look at why they are a good fit for your child? I'm sure you'll be able to find some skills matches that you can emphasise :)
