Last Primary Sports' Day for DS

Post by ourmaminhavana »

I dread Sports' Day. Throughout primary DS has never, ever had a certificate for anything! Today was last chance saloon. He reminded me this morning that he always comes fourth and I did the usual never mind, it's the taking part, doing your best talk that I roll out on these occasions. He told me that he was in three races, in all of which, as expected, he didn't get a place.
Then we had the Key Stage 2 relay. Shock horror DS is standing on the line holding the baton (his friend is showing him how  ). The last race of his primary school life. I wonder if relay counts; I wonder if he will leave his team miles behind after the first crucial leg; a slip seems the worst case scenario, the race begins...He hands over in second place and his team comes first! Oh joy of joys! You should have seen his face. He was unbelievably thrilled, as was I! :D
Sorry, just had to share. :D
Next year it all begins again with DD in Reception.
As for DS, he's going to a grammar school, one of whose specialisms is Sport. OMG!

Awww, that made me  with happiness for your son and for you. Endings are always sad, but last year when dd left primary, we had an end of year party for the class and made a huge thing of it being the beginning of exciting times - still didn't stop soppy old me from shedding a tear or two though

Thanks, I'm feeling a bit boastful  now I've calmed down!
A party sounds like a lovely idea Snowdrops. The leavers' song makes me blub and that's been in the years when he isn't leaving!!

oh that's brilliant! Well done him. Great to end on a triumph.
Our sports day is rubbish - the children are lined up in fours of the best 4, the next best 4 etc down to the limpers and crawlers and skippers. Last year, for some reason (known only to the cruel streak in the PE teacher) my little one was in the supposed best 4 - despite being a quarter the size of the others and despite having not been good enough to represent the school in the PE champs. Well, let me amend that, good enough to be reserve, good enough for us all to have to turn up on a freezing June evening and hang around for 3 hours while he sat on the sidelines. Come sports day and all this is forgotten, suddenly he's good enough to be in the top 4 while his arch nemesis, the crazed bully, he who was in the school team, is of a sudden in the second rankings. So my boy loses all his races and crazed bully, in the line up my boy should have been in, the second line, wins all his.
I'm considering figuring a chunk of wax into a PE-shaped teacher.
Cannot wait for no more sports day, no more knowledge of all this.

We had a party for the Y6s too last year, much against my better judgement. I'd put up with 7 years of having parties with rude children. Stopped having them in my house very quickly, unlike my elder children who were both in lovely year groups.

Anyway felt sorry for DC3 as he'd failed 11+, needed some reassurance and to feel special, so reluctantly agreed to party. Half the parents didn't bother to reply but brought their children anyway. The girls were unpleasant to each other, boys very rude. Food was thrown, garden toys broken and abused. Parents late to pick up. I have never seen most of the children again and have no desire to.

To sports day - DC above v good at sport, loves any type of sport, loves sports day. But I can watch him compete every weekend. DC2 rubbish at all sports, hates sports day as I do. No child has to stand up and complete mental arithmetic to a public audience if they're rubbish. There'd be an outcry. I'm not saying they shouldn't do sport, just not be forced to compete in public if they don't want to. By Y6 used to mess about, make no effort (not in his character to misbehave at all) so he didn't look like he'd run his heart out and still come last. Youngest is disabled, first sports day coming up, can't bear the thought of seeing her trying to compete on equal terms but she is looking forward to it. Large box of tissues required.

We don't have a sports day at DD2's primary, merely a 'sports activity afternoon'. It's all skip the hooly nonny bean bag catching, any kids who are any good at sports are moved into a supervisory role looking after a less able (or interested) child and the whole thing is a complete farce. In the 'roly poly relay' (I ask you) the kids are not actually allowed to do a roly poly any more (health and safety). The sporty kids hate it because it has nothing to do with sports and they feel they are being asked to do ridiculous things (they are), the less sporty hate it becasue it still involves them doing things they find difficult and unenjoyable. This will be my 11th and last and I can't wait for it to be over. Yesterday I went to DD1's sports day which was at...an athletics track    , kids ran races, threw actual objects and dare I say it, jumped! There were winners, ice creams, children getting cheered (especially those who were lagging behind in the long distance races) and those with special talents were actually given a chance to use them.
HOORAY!!!!
It did rain though...

Best primary school we've been involved with in this respect had a 'mixture' of events.
Team activities - not silly but which required more skilled to help/encourage less able/younger ones - followed by straight forward athletics for the top performers.
Everyone got to take part & the talented athletes got to excel.

We have got:
Firstly:
A leavers' trip -swimming at a funky pool miles away, followed by
A staff-pupil rounders match and
A barbecue.

Then a few days later:
A leavers' performance in which all leavers perform, in groups or individually

And then:
A leavers' assembly

And finally (I think):
A leavers' presentation in which they are all given presents paid for by the parents' association, and consisting, as I understand it, of individual personalised photos taken throughout their school life in a nice little album full of individual staff autographs and space for more autographs.

I don't think our particular school could be accused of failing to mark this particular rite of passage.
