Update on position of waiting lists

Post by Tessiebear »

Hi everyone,

Since the appeals process is finished now wondered if we had any update on

1 Where Pates waiting list has gone down to?

2 The lowest mark for Pates which has got a place?

3 I think people with 210 the passmark, have got into Denmark. Wondering if anyone knows if they are now full or still have places left unallocated this year?

4 Same question for Ribston

5 Anyone with news about marks which have made it in and whether any places unfilled for Stroud and Tommies and Crypt and Marling will also probably be useful for others

Anyone hoping to go to visit for the Open Mornings?

Pates is 6th July but think you need to make an appointment per website.

Ribston is 1 July with 2 sessions 9.15-11 and 11.45-1.15.

Denmark has also put their's on 1 July at 10-12. Have rung them but apparently no other time to fit it in so will be a quick scoot across town that morning to get them both in.

Don't know about the other schools as haven't looked as not visiting but someone else may be able to advise.

:D

No idea on everything else I'm afraid, but we are going to Pates open morning on July 6th(we emailed for a place)...we tried to go a few weeks ago, just as a sneaky look round, but they weren't very accommodating :? ...Tommies were the opposite!so we've already had a look there, still will go to the official ones though-and Crypt too-gosh..its busy busy trying to fit it all in!especially with non compliant younger brothers + a newborn in tow.... !

There are a number of children holding onto a Glos grammar place and an independent place. Let's hope they make up their minds soon.

that is SO frustrating!
Movement, please! The children want to be part of induction days and this sort of behaviour is NOT helpful.

I agree this is very unfair for children waiting for a place, to miss out on induction days and the joy of looking forward to their new school, getting uniform, chatting with any friends who are heading there and all the uncertainty it causes them not knowing where they will be over the summer holidays.

At the risk of making myself very unpopular with some people  , I think the LEA, in particular relating to the Grammar schools where so many places are so sought after and hard to come by, should say that once the appeals are settled people should have to make a definate choice before the induction days if they want the place they are holding and there should be some penalty if they turn down the place after that, unless some extreme circumstances apply such as unexpected relocation to another part of the country for parent's work.

I suppose it would be difficult to fix a specific penalty for the state sector whereas the independents can make it a hefty monetary penalty ie a terms's fees for failure to notify them in time ie a term's notice in advance.

A gloomy thing to consider is that, once the appeals have been heard and decided, there will be no more movement on waiting lists until the schools are back at PAN minus one. In other words, the 'extra' places given by allowed appeals must equal the number of children not taking up places from the appeals onwards.

If you've not appealed so far, you might consider doing so say at the very end of term, or during the next school year, especially if your child passed. Any places that are spare (ie between PAN and max the school can take after appeals) could be allocated by an ad-hoc appeal, but you can't appeal twice for the same school year (unless there is a material change in evidence).

I know two girls from my daughters school who are still holding onto places at Denmark Road but have also accepted places at St Eds. Its so frustrating that they even went to the liaison meeting this week when they have very little intention of going to DR.

why DO they do this, Lucy?? they should be named and shamed, anonymously if necessary, to the school. The school will want to have as many children as they can since they're paid per head. Plus, at Tommy's anyway, towards the end of term they start creating all the paperwork in readiness - we had tried to get our son moved from the class he was put into at the beginning since he was allocated German, and we'd rather have had Spanish (go there frequently AND meant to be easier to get a high mark). No could do. Mr K, the head, was adamant. That seating arrangements had been drawn up and form lists printed and so on. In the end it all worked out fine (he's OK at German!) but that's a different situation. It's messing the school around as well as unnecessarily stressing other families.

Sad to say, in our son's school in B'ham this year one boy simply failed to appear on first day of term - turned out he'd gone to indie instead. Someone accepted the place from the waiting list but imagine the disruption and expense caused to the school, the LEA, the replacement child and his parents. There really is no limit to some peoples' irresponsibility.
