Why the worry over Tiffin scores?

Post by on th ball »

I really can't understand the hype over Tiffin scores, and the whole 'It is so difficult to gain a place at '

You are lucky!!

In PLymouth there are nowhere near as many children sitting the 11plus,however the scores needed last year were 250 for DHS and 255 for PHS.

Just imagine the amount of children that do qualify for Tiffin that would be nowhere near the score for a PLymouth Grammer place!

Hi

Don't think the scores for different areas are comparable - made up of different numbers of tests
in N Yorks they are 227 or 205 depending on school, some areas seem to be around 500, others are 140 ish.

Can't compare

In Plymouth they sit 2 tests 1VR and 1 Maths, both multiple choice.

The maximum score is 282.

maybe not so on the ball. the fact is Tiffin IS extremely hard to get into with some 1300 trying for each school. there are children who get into london's top private schools who fail Tiffin. If the Plymouth exam is that much harder then either they have year groups of 10 or else the kids might consider bypassing the school altogether and head straight for university.

depends also on how they decide the "cut off" N Yorks is a percentage of the kids in the catchment, maybe Plymouth do similar.

The cut off will also vary if - as in N Yorks - nearly all the kids in catchment do the test o if it is an area where only kids can opt to do the test - that means that the baseline will change.

I suppose ultimately you to look at the A levels etc to asses whether the reputation (and effort consumed  ) of being hard to get into is justified.
Tiffin got 1066 (girls) and 943 (boys)
PHS got 789
DHS got 1004 and 934
The Skipton schools got 1125 (boys) and 1058 (girls)

Not musch difference apart from a lower score at PHS so perhaps the different scores on entry don't make such a difference?

In Plymouth the 'cut off' is the score of the 120th candidate,so it will differ each year, there is no 'catchment' so children from all over Devon and Cornwall apply. Because off the high scores needed, only the really bright kids apply.

Also regarding the comment of 'only having classes of 10' how is this relevant?

I assume this comment was made by a parent of an unsucessful Tiffin child?

wrong on the ball. comment comes from current tiffin parent. the point about year groups of 10 refers to the fact that probably very few successful tiffin applicants score over 250. The real point is that what does it matter to us in this area that your cut off is so much higher. parents just want to get their kids into a decent school and tiffin is VERY hard to get into. end of. not a sensitive post of yours at this stressful time for so many parents.

Hi

This is to Not the point,

Whilst the comments made might be tactless they do put the whole Tiffin thing into perspective, noone is denying that it is difficult to get into, but it does highlight the fact that other schools are harder to gain a place. You may think it is irrelevant what scores are needed in Devon, but on the ball was only stating that if everyone is worrying about scores of 234,then imagine the worry of needing to get a score of 250-255.

In the past there has been a huge mystery surrounding the Tiffin exam, and has only recently come to light that in actual fact it is no different than any other 11plus exam.
If parents were a bit more open , peoples attitudes towards Tiffen might be a bit different.

i agree guest. there may be loads of schools that are very hard to get into, but parents in this area aren't applying to schools in devon.they just see their very clever kids (some of whom get scholarships to top west london private schools) failing to get into tiffin. that is very frustrating and upsetting. and how are parents supposed to be more open?

You aren't comparing like with like On the Ball. In Plymouth you say it's VR and Maths. For Tiffin it's VR and NVR. If the exams were exactly the same, ie duplicate papers, you may have a point. As it is, you haven't. If you doubt how difficult it is to get in to Tiffin, take a look at Silvergirl's posts elsewhere on the forum. She has just got a place at St Paul's, one of the toughest schools to get in to anywhere in the country, yet she is only on the waiting list at Tiffin.
