The Tutors-vocab builder
We purchased this a while ago,in the vain hope to help ds with his vocab as he is very "boy"with his reading
I actually think its wonderful and has been a great help...has anyone else used it?
I have to say though some of the words(opposite meanings)are pretty hard!!!!is this REALLY the standard expected?

We are using it too - agree some of it's very hard! Haven't yet come across anything that difficult in any of the papers we've done. Think I read somewhere else on this forum that is more difficult than the standard required. We are using a dictionary and checking DD knows the precise meaning of all the words that come up, not just the difficult ones. It's suprising how hazy their understanding of some of the easier words can be!

I really do like it though!seems to be doing a good job!

Re: The Tutors-vocab builder
The Vocab Builder is targeted at 11+, 12+ and Common Entrance, so it is quite demanding.
Despite that, it is worth using for two reasons. Firstly, a word learned from it might just be the difference between qualifying for the 11+ and not qualifying. Secondly, none of the learning is wasted - it will all benefit your child in years to come.
Having said that, I will admit that the author of the Vocab Builder does enjoy setting challenging material for the sheer fun of doing so!

I sometimes have a go at it for fun ( ) it is very challenging, however having said that sometimes you find a word that you use which you may never have done otherwise. the class I teach now tell everyone I am a termagant , following an extract from the Deepwoods which we read..

Re: The Tutors-vocab builder
a good vocabulary is ALWAYS impressive (correctly used!) and never wasted. Am sure I convince other people I'm cleverer than I am because I know more words! Masks a confusion of ignorance and nonsense. Luckily my boys were born with good vocabs but I do remember at the assessment "lesson" with the tutor for DS1 she was shocked because he didn't know what "emit" meant. I doubt I did at 10. We all know what it means now. And that it is an anagram of time, and that it is an easy one to pop into the hidden 4 letter words. Although, having said that, I don't think that particular question type has come up in the last 2 or 3 years in the Glos tests.

sorry meant to add-click on interactive cds above^and theres a list of the Tutors ones, along with the demos..I think they are very good
Re: The Tutors-vocab builder
It does seem very difficult. I can do it :0) LOL...Big up to me!!
I am not sure if it would demotivate my DS2 at this stage. However, I do think it is valuable but expensive and I cannot find my cards to purchase it. Maybe DH has hidden it to stop me spending!
DS1 informed me that the real test last year was definately easier than most of the practice papers he sat. Let's hope it doesn't get any harder for this year
