Verbal Reasoning

Post by Tulip »

Could anyone please help me on this Dynamite Education Publishers question?

1) If the code for BACK is 5 2 6 12, what does 9 10 17 6 mean?

Answer is FINE

2) If the code for IMAGE is RNZTV, what does ELRXV mean?
Answer is VOICE

3) If the code for FRAME is UIZNV, what does GZYOV mean?
Answer is TABLE

Please explain.

no 1 is a mystery to me :oops:

for no 2 & 3
these are mirror codes cut the alphabet in half and work from each end with M|N in the middle.
so..
a=z
b=y
c=x
etc etc.

edit to add
q3 is either mistake typing GXYOV (it should be GZYOV ) or problem with the question. :?

Q1 :
B A C K
actual position in alphabet: 2 1 3 11
code = position +3 +1 +3 +1
gives 5 2 6 12

so reverse code 9 10 17 6
-3 -1 -3 -1
gives position 6 9 14 5
F I N E
(couldn't get numbers/letters to line up under eachother - hope it makes sense!)
Edit: Agree with mitasol about the error in Q3 as well.

WOW Chicko mum,

what gave you the clue to think of doing that? Is this type of code question covered in any other papers?

I really must start covering more questions, I have never come across anything like that before.

Thanks

I wrote the alphabet out in a line then wrote the code numbers below the relevant letters ... the pattern just seemed to jump out at me.:D
Hours of watching DD do this sort of thing and practising with her helps a lot! :shock:
DD covered Bond & NFER papers and I'm sure this sort of sequence where the difference goes back and forth has come up in those.

Thank you for the info.

DC is going to be sitting 11+ in November, so I have not yet started doing the full papers yet. Should DC be doing these papers already? I thought they were the last ones to be done?

Sorry for showing my ignorance, this is my first journey down this path.

I think level of practise depends on a) which schools/area you're applying for and b) how well DC can do VR type questions and the speed. This is a personal decision based on your DC and family - there is no right answer. There are plenty of debates about how much is enough/too much for you to read through - lots of food for thought!
We're applying for the N London/Herts superselectives where pass rates for VR/NVR are high 70%s just to get through to second round of maths & english :shock: I've read on other threads that some areas are looking for around 55%.
We went through the Bond books to learn technique, only recently started on full papers - it's important to build up speed as well as accuracy with the pass rates we're aiming at. We haven't done the Bond test papers yet, sorry if I mislead you.
Perhaps you could do a full paper with DC (timed) and see what the score is - that should give you an indication of how much you need to do and what to focus on - speed, eliminating silly mistakes (I think they ALL make these! :roll: ), gaps in knowledge ...
Have you looked at the section for your county/area? There will be lots of useful insights in that section relevant to your tests. :D

B is character number(2)+2 =4
L is forward 2 characters = N
U is character number (21)+2=23
E is forward 2 characters = G

So

M is character number(13)+2 =15
A is forward 2 characters = C
I is character number (9)+2=11
L is forward 2 characters = N

(thank you chicko mum for all your advice)
