Converting all Schools to academies
Interesting article in the Guardian today - Surrey County Council is considering converting all Secondary Schools to academies.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/201 ... -academiesSurrey County Council has written to the education secretary, Michael Gove, asking for his views on an "exciting" proposal for it to relinquish control of all 53 schools. The Department for Education said it welcomed the "ambitious thinking".
Re: Converting all Schools to academies
Our local Catholic Grammar in Barnet applied and was accepted, but has decided (along with all other Catholic schools I understand) not to pursue, as it would mean giving the land to the council, and at least in our case it was bequest to the school by the church so is not for giving.

I can't say I'm surprised - it seemed so radical!

Agreed, I can't imagine why the council would have wanted all schools to opt out in this way. However quite an embarrassing about turn, though
