I have questions! Would you mind helping if you can?

Post by woeisme »

Hi all. :)

I'm new to the forum so please bear with me if I ask something that's already covered.

My dd is sitting the 11+ this November. We are in Harlow but looking at Chelmsford, Westcliff and possibly St Bernards.
Would I be correct to thnk that Chelmsford is more selctive than the other two schools I am considering? Also, can anyone tell me where I can fnd the cutoff scores for last year for those schools?

Many thanks.

Welcome to the Essex section, what I like to think of as one of the saner areas of the forum.

You are right in thinking that the Chelmsford schools have a higher cut off than the Southend schools. I believe the cut off for Westcliff/Southend was approx 305 ( ie the standardised score, not sure what this is in terms of percentages) for out of area candidates last year, Chelmsford is quite a bit higher. Therefore it is always worth putting the Chelmsford school first on your list as if you put it lower down but still achieve the marks required to get in , you would be offered your first choice. Chelmsford does not give any priority for local children, Westcliff does.

If you scan through the Essex section and look for posts in early March for the schools you are looking at, people have been helpful in posting the approx marks their children have gained to get in. I wish I was clever enough to link you straight through but Moved might be along soon and she is normally able to do such things.

Good luck.

Hi,

An average needed for Chelmsford is approximately 75%, Southend for out of borough children is around 60%. St Bernards around 50%.

This is very imprecise as the scores are standardised each year. If you scroll back a few pages you will find a couple of threads titled "Scores on the doors". These will give you the actual scores that children got and where they ended up.

Most children drop 10% when they sit the test due to the unfamiliar environment and the pressure of three exams back to back.
