Member Suggestions for Reading Material

Post by Amber »

In response to my own excellent suggestion  , I have gone through the old posts in the forum looking for all those which sought suggestions for reading material for particular ages and stages of children. I have pasted the links to these below. If members have further suggestions, they can be posted here - not sure how; but a green person will advise, I am sure. There is further scope to refine this if there is enough demand or confusion - eg we could try and age/gender band the books.

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... 11&t=16151" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;: suggestions from the Birmingham and Walsall forum

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... 38&t=15758" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - advice about a Year 2 girl

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... =5&t=12890" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - original question was about a Year 5 child

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... 38&t=15647" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - lots of suggestions for Year 5

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... 38&t=13644" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - started as books for adults; some for teenagers

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... 38&t=14575" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Year 6 girls were the starting point

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... =6&t=14038" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Year 2

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... =5&t=13588" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - getting girls interested

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... f=1&t=8860" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Year 5 boys

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... =1&t=16969" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - the one that started this thread - girls of 6-7 years

This might not be an exhaustive list - but compiling it has exhausted me!

Amber :)

As I now have an excuse to mount a soapbox, could I please just put in a plea for reading to your children, rather than always expecting them to read independently, just because they can? This way, you take the hard work out of it, but leave the pleasure; you can stretch them in a way that might be too challenging for them always to do themselves; you can decode and explain unknown words, put on silly voices to add atmosphere; and it is one of the great pleasures of parenting too. So many parents stop reading to children once they can do it for themselves - but there is no reason to, until they ask you to stop (I doubt they will). And, just as this means you can read 'above' them; don't underestimate the fun of diving into your bed, children around you, and reading some of the picture books they enjoyed when younger too!

I totally agree. We do it in a slightly different way that involves listening to them read too. When I am not teaching on a Sunday morning we all climb in to bed and share a book. We read a chapter each. DH drones a bit, but we're all used to that now.
