Help please.. East Kent Grammar Schools selections

Post by nap-attack »

Hi

We only managed to get around 2 Grammar schools before the Kent test results came out. We live in Herne Bay and my son absolutely loved Queen Elizabeth at Faversham. It had a lovely feel, friendly and the art and DT departments were great. These are the areas my son loves and has most interest in. We are putting this as our first choice even though we are just within their catchment area, though this isn't the closest school to us.

My question is I am struggling to put 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices. We only managed to get to Barton Court which seemed like a nice school but we weren't sure that his creative side would be catered for, they only do art every two weeks. I am also unsure of the International Baccalaureate. He would prefer a mixed school though.

Does anyone have any experiences of Barton, Langton, Dane Court and Chatham House.?? How well are their creative subjects catered for??.. To me friendliness and happiness come first before any league tables.

My only experience of Langton has been the rude PA who wouldn't allow us to visit the school despite advisingher we had missed the last open session due to a death in the family. She basically said it was tough!!!... This attitude hasleft me with a bad feeling about this school.

HELP?????? Very confused and running out of time.

I wonder if this might get a better response on the Kent forum?

My thoughts on Chatham House & Dane Court here:

It sounds like your priorities are similar to mine, and Chatham House would suit better. However its specialisms are maths and science, not arts.

I think in Herne Bay, you may be out of catchment for the Canterbury Grammars. There was alot on the appeals pages about Herne Bay and Whitstable missing out last sept.

Hi,
I live in Herne Bay, and was in this situation last year, we loved QE and did risk putting it as first choice, but catchment only reached the middle of whitstable.
My dd was allocated Barton Court and we are very impressed and she loves it,so, living in Herne Bay I think you need to keep an open mind.
But, there has been a rumour that QE have more places this year,so hopefully catchments will be different from last years. I was surprised as a lot of children from the town attend QE and the distance seems to have shrunk dramatically over the last two years. Good Luck :D

It does seem herne bay / whitstable get a rough deal......my DD is at Simon Langton, and her best friend lives in Herne bay and had to appeal to get in as she was out of catchment!!

Simon Langton have said they only took children last year up to 6.1 miles from the school. Despite asking again if I could visit and pointing out that we had missed the open day because of a death in the family they are still saying no. I think Barton Court said their catchment was about 8 miles last year which would just bring us in. I am going to see Dane Court Friday morning. I still haven't completed the online admission form, will be a last minute descision on Friday before the new deadline
