1. 3rd number divided by 2, multiplied by 1st number = 16

2. 3rd minus 1st, multiply by 2 = 46

3. 1st minus 3rd, minus 2 = 19

4. 3rd minus 1st, multiply by 2 = 58.

[Excellent, these are the tutors papers, however the answer the software gives for question 3 is 21 when it should be 19 ]

Ah, I had a feeling I recognised the first one! Although the use of decimal places is not unheard of in this type of question, it is pretty rare.

The error is one of those things, and you can see how it came about - the author just forgot to take away 2 when creating the answer sheet.

There is no need to use decimals.

(10[25]5) (9[45]10) (4[?]8)

10 x 5 = 50
50 divided by 2 = 25

9 x 10 = 90
90 divided by 2 = 45

4 x 8 = 32
32 divided by 2 = 16

I do not teach my children to "play" with one of the outside numbers in the first instance. They must use both the numbers each side for their first operation. By keeping to basic rules, they will always find the answer. [unless its a publishers error]

I keep to rules in order for the child to work quickly and efficiently.
