HELP - Sixform College advice needed
Help,
Can anybody recommend any Independant sixform colleges in the W1 or Kesington area? My DS wants to study Alevels - History, Economics, English and possibily English Lit.
I have been to see a couple with my DS, one he liked, the other not so much. Would rather go on recommendation.
Appreciate any info that may assist us.
Thanks

Hi
Think this post would be better if you put it in a dfifferent section.
Maybe the '6th form' part of the 'beyond 11 plus' section?
Think I'd try the 'Independent schools' part of the 'General' section.
Hope you get the help you need.

My daughter in April 2009 did a revision GCSE course at MPW " Mander Portman Woodward . We thought it was good. They are near South Kensington. I have seen many good write ups in the Sunday Times education section as to how well they do for A levels .
Re: HELP - Sixform College - choice of subjects
Hi! I know this was not the original question, but may I mention something?
Both English Language and English Lit at A Level may not help for university entrance. Clearly, best to do mostly subjets which the student enjoys, but this may need to be tempered with pragmatism.
I have looked at universities a lot and they value English Lit A Level for English Lit degrees but not, in general, English Language. Also, I get the feeling that if you do English Lit at A level then English Language is unnecessary duplication, as English Lit gives you plenty of kudos for your English study skills and the understanding and use of the language. Would your child consider another subject?
What do people think?

I agree - then I am and old fogey who did Lit and Lang at O level But only Lit was offered at A level ... it was assumed that that language would be covered along the way.
I think as workhard says it is crucial to check up on what universities want - you are looking at economics A level - can be useful to take Maths or Government and Politics with this?

Know quite a lot about Independent 6th Form colleges - other half used to teach at MPW.
MPW is very good but it tends to specialise in bespoke course for students requiring resits or in say 1year or if some of the GCSE are weakish.
Why do you want to look at an Independent 6th Form College?- the are some very good 6th form colleges in SW London. Richmond used to have a good reputation but most are ok.
I you are looking for somewhere for a std 2 year course then I would go for the state sector.
