Fairer admissions for poor children? Let’s start by ending selection
Successive governments have shirked from the job of ensuring the 11 plus is outlawed for good and, over the years, I have heard all the feeble reasons why: “We can’t destroy good schools / it’s only a few schools/ we will get rid of it when all schools are as good as grammar schools”.
I have also witnessed the bigotry of the pro-grammar school lobby

I
felt depressed and angry about the often wilfully misleading coverage that immediately undermined the achievements of so many pupils. It was hard for me,as a journalist specialising in education issues, to know where to turn for the alternative arguments.

Fiona Millar.

Maybe invite her to come and post on our friendly forum. :)

Fiona Millar has a certain world view. Others have theirs.

Hint: she is married to Alistair Campbell

Well she's long-term-partnered with him. She also regularly writes for The Guardian.

If there are any other sterotyping points I can dig up, I'll let you know. 8)

Personally I think Alistair Campbell should have stuck to singing with UB40

In spite of all that, I would say that this bit at least is spot on:
Ali[a?]stair Campbell's long-term partner who writes regularly for the Guardian wrote:The 11-plus test is becoming an embarrassment even to the authorities that use it. In fully selective Buckinghamshire, councillors have been sitting on an educational psychologist's report into the impact of coaching for almost two years because it concluded that, unless every child could get access to the same private tuition, it was impossible to judge the test results fairly.

You are indeed correct pippi.

One just hopes that Michael Gove's intention to release schools from the national curriculum straitjacket will allow Bucks to permit its schools to provide much greater 11+ familarisation (for those schools that want to).
