Bursary for Merchant Taylors
Hi,
Does anyone know what process they follow at MTS for bursaries? Is there any chance of getting a bursary even if you're not at a low income? What happens if people lie about their income?

Bursaries are for low income families and if you haven't got a low income and claim you have then someone is likely to notice. So would have to remember not to turn up at school events in a fancy car or ask for time off to take the kids skiing or to the caribbean.ranmis wrote:Hi,

So what is the process they follow - besides checking the proof of income? Do they have an interview? Would they give preference to bright students for bursaries, irrespective of their financial status?

Lying about income in a bursary application is tantamount to theft. I would hope that at least some schools would wish to pursue it through the criminal courts.
Have you seen this about Merchant Taylors bursary policy: http://www.mtsn.org.uk/files/Bursary%20 ... tember.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you are given a reduction of fees irrespective of income, that is usually referred to as a scholarship. Yes they do exist but are often lower than they once were, with more assistance being given in the form of means tested bursaries. Some schools give scholarships for excelling in areas such music, art, sport, drama.
Scholarships may be as high as 50% but that is becoming rarer, often schools quote 10% to 25%, but they can be topped up by means tested bursary.
Sorry I have no specific knowledge of MT, schools often give guidance on their website, or the admissions office should be able to give guidance.

Bursary is awarded to family on low income. Families on middle income can apply. The level of award varies. Anyone may apply but must provide accurate information and leave the decision to the school. Bursary applications for most schools are processed by a central body and all information are verified,false information may result in crinimal prosecution and any bursary already awarded and utilised must be paid back. It is not enough just to be on low income, the child must perform or score high marks in the exam. Consideration is given to the cleverest applicants top down.

Sorry, Ranmis, I'm still in shock, particularly over the last question. So, who wants to admit that they lied about their income in order to get a bursary? (an emoticon of your choice)

Yes, but to answer it, hopefully they get caught, prosecuted for fraud and kids chucked out of school?KS10 wrote:Sorry, Ranmis, I'm still in shock, particularly over the last question. So, who wants to admit that they lied about their income in order to get a bursary? (an emoticon of your choice)
