Appeal Help

Post by Bexley_Dad »

Hi,

My DD did not get into DGSG but got Chis & Sid. Hopefully she is near the top of the waiting list for DGSG, but she is quite sad as she had set her heart on going there hence we are thinking of appealing.

Help please with the appeal. What should we base it on? Logistically C&S is nearer to us, she was not ill on the day and there is no other real reason apart from the fact she really wants to go to DGSG.

Also, with the appeal process what should I prepare for it? Friends of ours spoke of getting letters of recommendation, examples of school work etc. but for me that seems over the top but that has got me worried about what I need to do to win the appeal!

Many thanks.

Regards,
Rob

Hi Bexley_dad,

I am not from your area so not sure about the specific schools, presumably you put DGSG first ? and Sid & Chis 2nd?
If so then was it score based that stopped her getting her first choice place?
Or was it your distance from the school?
How you appeal will depend on which of these it is - if it score then you need to prove academic ability and why she did not make the score on the day, if it is distance then you have to prove why THIS SCHOOL is the right one for her....

See if you can get the info - and no doubt some locals will appear in a mo to clarify the process

Morning HM,

Dartford takes children based on test (after selecting those within 1 mile of school), so her score I think is right on the boundary of the cut-off. Therefore I suppose we are appealing on those grounds.

Should I be looking at taking in her school work to demonstrate her ability?? Also does the appeal take into account of her SATS scores??

Hi there

Link to everything (well almost) there is know about appeals is here:

http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/appeals" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You will be appealing for Non qualification so will need to demonstrate academic ability and explain why she didn't get the score on the day. So.. will need evidence of ability (listed in the Q&A) and also any extenuating circumstances. Obviously the nearer you are to the cut off the better..

I can recommend reading the feedback by dejavu. I stole my 'format' from that post and can recommend the single page, bullet point with appendix's to refer directly to a piece of evidence. Your friends were right about HT supporting letter etc. Even though you are not fighting non qualification they can add to your case for a particular school.

In the short term all you need to do is state on the form that you are appealing and that additional information will follow, which must then be sent in at least 14 days (I think) before the date of appeal.

Fingers crossed for the waiting list to come good for you! :D

yes i agree with above - you are appealing for oversubscription not non-qualification as your dd passed the test. I also based my over-sub appeal on de-javu's format. You need to keep the reasons simple then add the evidence to an appendix.
For example for my dd the main points were
1)nearest appropriate school - provided bus service that is free and door to door - appx 1 - timetable.
I also said how i was starting a new job- provided evidence, so i needed dd to have easy transport to and from school.
during my presentation they asked me how easy transport was to allocated school and i explained that it wasnt great.

2)schools specialisms suited my dd - appx 2 had letter from school teacher plus club leader indicating dd was talented in one of the schools specialist areas so would thrive there.

3)It was my dd's first choice grammar even though her sister attends another grammar.

My dd had passed test but not met cut off - like yours - so i did also include in appendix letters from school saying what SATS levels she was working at (5b and 5c at time of presentation)- I refered them to these letters in my presentation but did not use it as a main point on my cover letter.

#The feedbacks you need to read are in the sticky-feedback. i will try and post you the link

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. Where can I get de-javu's advice and copy of letter please?

We are meeting with HT next week, so will see if he will support our case, as it looks like the cut-off score this year is very high so no real hope for wait list.

That should take you to the page dejavu posted her appeals. They were for 12+ but the format is the same - there are many other appeal write ups here too. You need to read read read! Its great if the head is supportive but its you that needs to do all the research and hard work - good luck :)
